VENUE IDENTITY AND BEHAVIOR
In the last week the Interaction Design Team has started refining the interface qualities of the venue, including graphical and behavioral aspects, in order to support both web emulator and first prototype development.
(to get a quick recap on Venue and related design activity visit the “interaction design highlights” section on project page)

Main topics addressed by the initial experiments range from the behavior of single elements of a venue such as tabs, buttons, columns status and cinematic etc. to the relations between different venues and between the venues and the overall visual interaction environment.

Visual triggers, appropriateness of visual  feedback and transparency of both contents and functionalities at the venue level are emerging as crucial design points to be further investigated and solved.

  • What are the principles and rules for visualizing the venues on the ITSME main interface?
  • Which are the interface elements that can contribute to personalize the venue visualization (type, title, content, updates, notifications, recent info, most used functionalities etc.) in the different venue status (compact, extended)?
  • What level of information is needed to bring awareness on ongoing activities without being too intrusive?

The solution proposed is to add a third configuration besides the compact/extended status, that displays only the title and label image with overlapped some icons showing the recent activities of the venue(see image below).

This hypothesis allows to optimize the visual space of the home hosting a bigger number of venues in the same space and permits at the same time a clearer differentiation of the venues, on the basis of temporary relevance, content updates and ongoing communication activities.

The interaction design team  was involved in quick prototyping sessions aimed at testing and evaluating alternative possible solutions.

This was just the first small step in the direction of interface development and consistency check, that will be further developed in the coming weeks by way of iterative sessions with Software Development Team.

  1. I really like this idea of a third configuration because it will help users to reduce visual clutter in the UI (I am afraid many people will need to have a very large number of venues in front of them, e.g., general practitioners – about which I’ve already written a post that is going to be published in the next days).

Let me also point out that ourconversation with (future) users is not closed, and many design inputs might (and probably will) still come from their contributions and evaluation.

Very interesting, one of the possible outcome I can see is like having different skins (or themes) tailored on different user needs.

  3. Those minified venues look pretty neat! :)

thank you ale, i really love the “mini venue” chiara and the other guy had a very nice intuition. This prototype is still in development phase (what else is grooving more than a prototype?), i’m sure we will have very soon more nice GUI release.
