FSter is the first component we (itsme) are releasing to the development community, as an essential part of Guglielmo that might be reused by other projects and applications with similar needs: you can get it from here. [caption id="attachment_3356" align="alignright" width="137" caption="FSter sample architecture"][/caption] FSter is a virtual file system implementation based on Fuse technology and exploiting Tracker metadata technology to allow access to files according to the metadata they're associated to. Practically, FSter enables scenarios such as the following ones: browsing the content of a drive (or simply of a folder) according to a user-defined hierarchy or progression of filters based on...

Guglielmo 0.1 architecture RC3
In this last week the itsme tech team has worked on defining the architecture of Guglielmo, and sketching its APIs. Actually, it's been a great effort and we went through many different options and solutions, finally converging on the following one. This is what we are implementing in the next month to support our current front-end prototype (which is also currently being improved and that might be demonstrated during our visit to the USA, for tutorials at GROUP2009 and CTS2009). We are also working to set up a way to release the code of Guglielmo 0.1, but (of course) we have...

When should a project go open source?
Last week we had a technical workshop at itsme: the topic was Guglielmo, what we formerly called back-end. At some point, we realized we had to decide when to set up a public repository for our code. You know we have a working prototype for our user interface, but it is only (currently) for internal testing and we don't actually know under what license we'll release it. On the other hand, Guglielmo will be released under GPL, so we will make the code public... but should we wait to have something really working, or can we ask the open source...

Incase you were wondering about the open source approach that itsme has adopted, or simply curious about how we are planning the system architecture extending a standard GNU/Linux system, then I have found a perfect link for you. Vincenzo, Marco and Michele wrote a scientific paper Guglielmo: An open source approach to the development of a smart Linux extension . This paper is a quick read and answers most of your queries regarding the subject. Why Guglielmo? Discover this in the paper as...

We recently updated the ongoing design activity document with the technical deliverables, revealing the itsme OS software architecture, and other details such as the choice of the development platform (language, libraries, environment..etc.). All related to the first demonstrator. The first demonstrator will then be followed by the development of a prototype. The itsme operating system (seen above) will expand the linux operating system beyond its current horizons. It will consist of two main parts: a front end based on the stories and venues metaphor and a backend, situated between a standard linux operating system and the front end, delivering the services...

We doubled our Tech force
4 brilliant software developers joined our team this Jan and its high time we introduced them to you, so say hello to... Roberto "MadBob" Guido Software developer for job and passion, free software advocate by vocation. Member of various groups spreading GNU/Linux to the masses (as the Torino Linux Task Force) and Maintainer for a number of projects such as the Lobotomy Project Fabio Erculiani I am a 23 years old guy, living in Trentino, on top of the Garda lake. I love mixing jokes (thus fun) with daily work (thus my job), I sometimes feel like "Luigi Pirandello"(if you know what I mean). I was 18...

What is our tech team up to?
They have locked themselves in the upper floor of Itsme loft, stay there from morning till evening, and all we get to hear are heavy discussions(hard to decipher what’s being discussed), all we get to see are post-its (in bulks) and some lines and blocks that look like flowcharts. What's this all about ? From left to right Vincenzo Di Massa (From Siena Uni), Roberto "Madbob" Guido (check lobotomy project), Lorenzo, Alessandro, Fabio and Michele (Sabayon guys), Giovanni and finally Marco who is probably on the other side of the lens. I am told that they have a three-day intense workshop...
